“Computer hunch“ often involves the scalene muscles: three pairs of relatively slender muscles found at the sides of the neck, between and beneath the larger sternocleidomastoid and trapezius muscles. The scalene muscles are essential for rotation of the head as well as inhalation. Contraction of these muscles also moves the chin forward, placing undue strain on the neck and even causing numbness all the way down in the fingers.
Luckily, spinal problems and discomfort caused by computer use can be successfully managed and prevented. I often treat patients presenting with neck pain caused by laptop computer use with Active Release Techniques (ART). By using ART, I can both address the immediate problem of neck pain and help the body to better withstand the stress that caused the pain in the first place.
